My name is Marty, and I first picked up a sword the week my son was born.

It might not sound logical, but becoming a dad made me finally chase something I’d been drawn to my whole life.

I watched every video I could find, joined a local group in Austin, TX, and threw myself into training.

Then I moved to Spain.

I was juggling family, training  and a completely new language, but every time I traveled to meet other fencers in Europe, I saw how deep this art really was...and how far I still had to go.

So I started experimenting with training at home.

I tried everything: drills in the hallway, footwork in the yard, slow cuts in the living room after my son went to bed.

Some things helped… most didn’t.

And then I found the pell , a simple stationary target used in solo training.

The pell changed everything. 

With nothing but sword and a wooden post (or sometimes even just a piece of paper or hanging tennis ball), I could finally train the fundamentals that actually matter: distance, accuracy, power, control, footwork, structure, defence, and precision.

I could build real mechanics, real timing, and real confidence.

And every time I did get to train with a partner, the improvement showed instantly.

I wasn’t just swinging a sword anymore. I was learning to fence.
